Heavy Armour
The Scarab Tank destroyer was quickly replaced by the Gallieni.
The Scarab - despite being somewhat of a field expedience - had
been a successful weapon system and its replacement had a
similar layout - a turret-less hull on a hover drive train with a
fixed mount main weapon - however the laser based armament
was replaced by two powerguns: a 20cm with a Tribarrel at the
commanders hatch. The Gallieni had better frontal armour than
the Scarab but managed to maintain the same speed.
In addition to the Gallieni, however, a new turreted Heavy Tank Destroyer was specified: the Garibaldi. This system -
also coming into use in the same period with their allies in the Gallic League the Compagnie de Barthe - is also fitted
with powerguns, and - although smaller in calibre at 15cm than those fitted to the Gallieni - two of them are
squeezed into a small turret. The Garibaldi also featured a tribarrel secondary and a small Manta ATGW launcher. The
price it paid, though, was both bulk and speed: it was slower than
the Gallieni and rather easier to spot.
From the same source as the Compagnie de Barthe, the Legion also
purchased hulls for a new medium tank and a new heavy tank to be
called the Shamont and the Larminat. The turrets for both of these
vehicles, however, came from Mitsusaki Industries on Hiroseke
rather than the source for the hulls. Like on its predecessor, the
Shamont Medium Tank uses an advanced 17cm Medium Laser for
the main gun although - unlike the Firefly where the secondary
weapon was another lighter laser - the powerplant on the Shamont
is dedicated to only running the main weapon allowing for both finer
control and prolonged bursts.
In consequence, the secondary weapon is a self-contained powergun
tribarrel. Both of these weapons can be used in the AAA role.
