The SGC also imported the 'Katy' mortar variant of the Kunitsa from Uralvagonzavod which had a large, slow firing, heavy mortar fitted in the front glacis and room in the rear for only four infantry plus the mortar crew and rounds. This vehicle was left with the standard Ukrainian engine, which was sufficient for it to keep up with the Kunitsa's when they were acting as prime movers. The Katy's did not have a secondary weapon fitted so - again - the Stewart Regiment were forced to use infantry weapons fired from one of the many hatches - top or rear - to provide local defence. Although the Kunitsa's had the very respectable 1cm gatling reailgun - as fitted at the Uralvagonzavod factory - by then the secondary infantry weapon 'habit' had become firmly established and infantry always fired in support from a moving vehicle.
